Product Introduction
This high flow filter cartridge is a core consumable of industrial water filter systems, designed for high-capacity liquid filtration in water treatment. As a high-performance high flow filter cartridge, it adopts large-diameter pleated structure and gradient density filter media, so each cartridge can process far more water than conventional small-size cartridges. When matched with proper filter housing, it can work independently or cooperate with a self-cleaning filter to form a staged filtration scheme, removing suspended solids, colloids, rust, silt and organic particles before reverse osmosis and other fine treatment units. The outer-to-inner flow path keeps dirt trapped on the outer pleated surface; the rigid inner support core prevents media collapse under high differential pressure. Multiple end cap styles and sealing materials are available to fit most mainstream high flow filter housings on the market. It is engineered as a compatible alternative to well-known imported models, with matched dimension, micron rating and sealing interface, so end users can replace old cartridges directly without modifying existing pipeline or housing layout. Filtration grades cover 1μm, 3μm, 5μm, 10μm, 20μm, 40μm and 70μm, to satisfy different raw water quality and protection requirements for downstream equipment.
Working Principle

The working principle of the high flow filter cartridge follows the depth pleated filtration mechanism. Raw water enters from the outer surface of the pleated media, and flows inward through multi-layer gradient filter media. Large particles are intercepted on the outer coarse layer, while finer contaminants are captured by the inner fine layer. This gradient structure optimizes dirt holding capacity and slows down pressure rise. Clean water converges through the inner support core and flows out from the end outlet.
As contaminants accumulate on the filter surface, the differential pressure between inlet and outlet gradually rises. Operators monitor the pressure gauge of the filter housing to judge the service life of the cartridge. When the pressure difference reaches the preset threshold, the cartridge needs replacement. In some projects, engineers install a self-cleaning filter upstream of the high flow cartridge vessel. The self-cleaning filter removes large debris online, reduces the contaminant load entering the cartridge stage, and extends the service cycle of high flow filter cartridges greatly. This combination avoids frequent shutdown and cartridge replacement, which is especially valuable for continuous running water plants.
Unlike bag filters, the pleated structure provides far larger effective filtration area in the same installation space. Unlike melt blown cartridges, high flow pleated cartridges have stronger structural stability and higher dirt holding capacity. It is a middle position choice between coarse automatic self-cleaning filtration and ultra-fine membrane filtration.

Core Advantages
1. Super high single element flow rate
One 40-inch high flow filter cartridge can reach around 350 GPM, which equals the flow of many standard small cartridges. For the same system flow, the required cartridge quantity and housing size are reduced obviously. It saves footprint in the filter room and cuts capital cost for filter vessels, pipe fittings and valves.
2. Large dirt holding capacity and longer service life
Deep pleated gradient media extends the blocking cycle. For many RO pretreatment projects, the service cycle can reach weeks under stable raw water quality, reducing shutdown frequency and labor cost for replacement.
3. Direct replacement design
The dimension, end cap locking structure and sealing size are designed to match mainstream imported high flow cartridges. Users can swap them into existing housings directly. No rework on pipeline, no new tooling required. It is a cost-effective alternative when original brand supply lead time is long or price rises sharply.
4. Broad chemical compatibility
Polypropylene media is resistant to most neutral water, weak acid and weak alkali solution. It suits most raw water, surface water, well water, RO feed water and general industrial wastewater. Different O-ring materials can be selected for special chemical conditions.
5. Simple installation and maintenance
The pull handle on the end cap makes loading and unloading fast. No special tools are needed. Compared with multiple small cartridge housings, the maintenance workload is reduced significantly.
6. Flexible combination with self-cleaning filter
For poor raw water with high suspended solids, pairing the high flow filter cartridge bank with a self-cleaning filter is a mature solution. The self-cleaning filter takes away large particles online, and the high flow cartridge captures fine particles to protect RO membranes. This configuration balances running cost and filtration precision.
Material Selection Guide
Material selection depends on water temperature, pH value and chemical content in the water.
Polypropylene media + PP core + EPDM seal: Most common option for RO pretreatment, cooling water, groundwater, normal temperature water. Cost competitive and widely recommended.
Polypropylene media + SS304 core + Viton seal: Suitable for slightly higher temperature, trace oil content or occasional chemical cleaning environment.
Silicone gasket: For food and beverage water treatment, high temperature pure water system.
Stainless steel 316L core: For chloride-containing water, seawater pretreatment, corrosive water medium.
If the water contains strong solvent, strong oxidant such as high concentration chlorine, please confirm media compatibility before ordering. High continuous chlorine exposure will damage polypropylene media and shorten cartridge life.
Application Scenarios
Reverse Osmosis (RO) pretreatment for brackish water and seawater desalination
Power plant boiler feed water and condensate polishing
Petrochemical process water and refinery water system
Electronics factory ultra-pure water pre-filtration
Food & beverage production water
Municipal water reuse and wastewater recycling
Steel mill circulating cooling water
Mining water treatment
Pharmaceutical water system
In seawater RO systems, the high flow filter cartridge is the key safety barrier before RO membranes. It intercepts fine sand, marine organism fragments and suspended matters that pass through upstream coarse filters. A damaged cartridge will lead to rapid membrane fouling and expensive membrane replacement. That is why many seawater projects choose reliable high flow cartridges instead of cheap melt blown elements.
In power plants, boiler feed water requires strict control of suspended solids and iron oxide particles. High flow cartridges are arranged in filter skids to guarantee stable water quality for boiler and heat exchange equipment.
How to Select the Right High Flow Filter Cartridge
Step 1: Confirm system total flow rate, calculate how many cartridges are needed.
Step 2: Confirm housing internal size and end cap type, to ensure compatibility.
Step 3: Choose micron rating. For RO pretreatment, 5μm or 10μm is the most popular selection.
Step 4: Confirm water temperature, pH, chlorine content and chemical medium, select media, core and O-ring material.
Step 5: Decide whether to add upstream self-cleaning filter according to raw water turbidity and SS value.
General selection reference:
Turbidity <5 NTU, stable raw water: Use high flow cartridge bank alone.
Turbidity >10 NTU, high SS, seasonal algae or sediment fluctuation: Add self-cleaning filter as first stage.
Comparison with Traditional Filter Cartridges
Standard 2.5 inch 40 inch melt blown cartridge usually carries around 10–15 GPM flow. To reach 350 GPM, you need more than 20 pieces and a large multi-cartridge housing. The whole set occupies large space and needs frequent replacement.
The high flow filter cartridge reaches 350 GPM for one single 40 inch element. Only a few cartridges can handle the same flow. Less cartridges mean fewer sealing points, lower risk of bypass leakage, less spare stock and less maintenance time.
Compared with bag filters: Bag filters are cheap but have unstable filtration precision, and fabric fiber shedding risk. High flow pleated cartridges offer absolute rated micron performance and consistent effluent quality, which is critical for membrane protection.
Installation & Operation Notes
Check O-ring surface for scratch or damage before installation. Lubricate Viton or EPDM seal properly.
Insert the cartridge vertically and lock the end cap correctly to avoid bypass.
After closing the housing, do slow venting before pressurization. Rapid water hammer may damage pleated media.
Record initial differential pressure. Replace cartridge when ΔP hits 2.0 bar. Do not keep running under excessive pressure, because media rupture may happen and unfiltered water enters downstream.
Do not reuse disposable PP high flow cartridges after heavy fouling. Backwashing cannot restore original performance.
Regularly check upstream self-cleaning filter operation status if you use combined filtration. Faulty self-cleaning filter will overload the cartridges quickly.
FAQ
Q1: Can this high flow filter cartridge replace Pall or 3M high flow cartridges directly?
A1: Yes. Our high flow filter cartridge adopts matched outer diameter, length and end cap interface. It can fit into existing high flow filter housing without modification. It is a proven alternative for users who want stable quality and shorter lead time.
Q2: What micron grade should I choose for RO pretreatment?
A2: 5μm and 10μm are the most common choices. If raw water has very low turbidity, 20μm is acceptable; for sensitive low-pressure RO membranes, 3μm is optional.
Q3: Can I clean and reuse these high flow filter cartridges?
A3: PP pleated high flow cartridges are designed as disposable elements. Once fully fouled, cleaning cannot recover the filtration area and precision. Reuse will bring particle breakthrough risk to RO membranes.
Q4: What is the difference between a high flow filter cartridge and a self-cleaning filter?
A4: A high flow filter cartridge is the consumable filter element for fine filtration. A self-cleaning filter is automatic equipment with screen and cleaning mechanism. Many projects use self-cleaning filter for coarse filtration first, then high flow filter cartridge for fine polishing.
Q5: How long is the normal service life?
A5: It depends on raw water quality. Under stable surface water or well water for RO pretreatment, typical service cycle ranges from 2 to 8 weeks. Poor raw water with high suspended solids will shorten the cycle obviously.
