1. Product Introduction of Reverse Osmosis Ultrafiltration System

In the whole pure water production flow, reverse osmosis elements are very sensitive to suspended solids, colloids, biological slime and macromolecular organics in raw water; direct feeding of unprocessed raw water will cause irreversible pollution of RO membranes in a short period. The reverse osmosis ultrafiltration system sets the ultrafiltration device in the front of reverse osmosis equipment, acting as the last high-precision pretreatment barrier to strictly control SDI value, turbidity and microbial content of water entering RO system.

LEFILIER provides differentiated ultrafiltration supporting devices to match various reverse osmosis units according to raw water quality and project layout demands. For medium-sized pure water stations with standardized layout, customers can adopt compact assembled Industrial Skid Mounted Ultrafiltration Equipment; all pipelines, instruments and control cabinets are integrated on one steel frame for quick installation and connection with RO equipment on site. For raw water with severe turbidity, oily wastewater and high organic load before reverse osmosis treatment, anti-clogging Tubular Ultrafiltration Membrane is the optimal choice; its wide flow channel avoids particle accumulation inside the membrane tube and adapts to harsh raw water environments. For small and medium factory pure water projects requiring one-stop delivery, customers can select fully assembled Integrated Ultrafiltration Water Purification Equipment with built-in backwash and chemical cleaning modules. For large-scale centralized pure water workshops in chemical, pharmaceutical and electronics industries, the fully tested Complete Ultrafiltration Integrated Equipment can support multi-group reverse osmosis mainframe centralized water supply.

All matched ultrafiltration devices adopt modified PVDF hollow fiber or tubular membrane materials with strong oxidation resistance. The built-in PLC program realizes linkage operation with reverse osmosis host: the UF system automatically executes backwashing and online cleaning according to the pressure difference signal, ensuring that the SDI value of water delivered to reverse osmosis is stably controlled below 3. Standard 304 stainless steel frame is adopted for all equipment, and 316L stainless steel can be customized for corrosive raw water, effectively avoiding secondary pollution of pipeline materials to pure water. This matched reverse osmosis ultrafiltration system has become the mainstream standard configuration for modern industrial pure water, ultrapure water and boiler make-up water treatment lines.

2. Working Principle of Reverse Osmosis Ultrafiltration System

The system operates in two linked modules: ultrafiltration pretreatment section and reverse osmosis desalination section, with coordinated physical interception + pressure-driven desalination working logic.

First stage: Ultrafiltration purification process. Raw water after multi-media and security filtration is boosted to 1.0–3.8 bar into the ultrafiltration membrane module. Relying on 0.01~0.1μm micropore physical sieving effect, ultrafiltration intercepts colloids, suspended particles, bacteria, algae and macromolecular organic matter in raw water. Clean permeate water flows into the intermediate water tank to supply reverse osmosis equipment, while intercepted pollutants are continuously washed away by cross-flow concentrated water to reduce membrane surface fouling accumulation. Timed automatic backwashing and periodic CIP chemical cleaning restore membrane flux to guarantee stable water supply for RO equipment.

Second stage: Reverse osmosis deep desalination process. Pretreated clean water from the ultrafiltration unit is pressurized by high-pressure pumps to the operating pressure required by RO membranes. Under high pressure, water molecules pass through the dense semi-permeable layer of reverse osmosis membranes, while dissolved salts, heavy metal ions and residual trace organic matter are intercepted by RO membranes, finally producing qualified pure water for production use.

The core value of the matched ultrafiltration part is to remove fouling precursors in advance. Without ultrafiltration protection, colloids and microorganisms will adhere to the RO membrane surface to form biological pollution, leading to decreased water production efficiency and frequent chemical cleaning of reverse osmosis membranes. The linkage control program of the whole system can synchronously adjust the ultrafiltration backwash rhythm according to the inlet pressure change of the reverse osmosis system, realizing intelligent coordinated operation of the whole water production line.

FAQ

Q1: Why must reverse osmosis equipment be equipped with an ultrafiltration system instead of only multi-media + security filter?

A: Conventional pretreatment can not effectively intercept tiny colloids and microorganisms in raw water. Ultrafiltration can thoroughly remove these pollutants, control SDI stably below 3 and avoid irreversible biological fouling of reverse osmosis membranes.

Q2: Will the ultrafiltration system increase the overall energy consumption of the reverse osmosis pure water line?

A: The power consumption of the ultrafiltration feed pump is low. Meanwhile, ultrafiltration reduces the cleaning frequency of reverse osmosis membranes and slows down RO performance attenuation, which actually reduces overall long-term energy and chemical agent costs.

Q3: What is the normal SDI standard of ultrafiltration effluent supplied to reverse osmosis?

A: Standard RO membrane requires inlet water SDI<5, and our matched ultrafiltration system can stably control effluent SDI ≤3 for long-term safe operation of reverse osmosis devices.

Q4: Can the reverse osmosis ultrafiltration integrated system realize fully unattended operation?

A: Yes. The PLC of the whole system supports linkage operation, automatic backwashing, differential pressure fault alarm and automatic chemical cleaning reminding, realizing 24-hour unattended automatic operation.

Q5: How long is the service life gap between RO membranes with ultrafiltration protection and those without ultrafiltration?

A: RO membranes protected by matched ultrafiltration have a service life of 3–5 years; without ultrafiltration pretreatment, RO membranes are prone to severe pollution and may need replacement within 1–2 years.

Q6: What problems will occur if the ultrafiltration system matched with reverse osmosis fails to perform regular cleaning?

A: Ultrafiltration membrane flux will drop sharply, resulting in insufficient water supply for reverse osmosis equipment. Pollutants will penetrate the damaged ultrafiltration layer and directly pollute the reverse osmosis membrane, causing expensive RO membrane replacement losses.
