2. Working Principle of Ultrafiltration Desalination System

Ultrafiltration desalination system adopts pressure-driven cross-flow physical interception technology, and the built-in PLC program automatically switches three cyclic working modes: saltwater production filtration, automatic backwashing and regular chemical cleaning.

2.1 Saltwater Filtration for Desalination Pretreatment

Original brackish water or seawater first removes large particle silt and impurities through the front security liquid filter, then is transported into the inner cavity of ultrafiltration membrane filaments by the anti-corrosion salt-resistant pump. Under the driving of operating pressure, water molecules and soluble salt ions pass through the membrane wall smoothly and flow into the intermediate water tank as qualified inlet water for the subsequent desalination RO system. Insoluble impurities such as silt, colloids, bacteria and algal microorganisms are intercepted on the inner surface of the membrane. The high-speed cross flow of raw salt water continuously scours the membrane surface to slow down the accumulation speed of pollutant filter cake and maintain stable permeation water flux in long-term operation.

2.2 Automatic Backwashing Process

As intercepted pollutants gradually accumulate, the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the membrane module rises continuously. Once the pressure difference reaches the preset alarm threshold, the system will automatically switch the pipeline electric valves. The clean produced water flows reversely into the membrane tube to wash away loose dirt attached to the membrane surface, and the dirt is discharged out of the system along with concentrated salt water. The whole backwashing process only lasts 3–8 minutes and will not cause long-term shutdown of the overall desalination production line.

2.3 Timed Chemical Cleaning Maintenance

A saltwater environment is easy to breed biological slime and form stubborn organic scale attached to the membrane surface.
