Product Introduction
The high flow filter cartridge system for oil and gas produced water treatment is a robust industrial water filter engineered for harsh onshore and offshore oilfield water processing. It adopts large-diameter pleated high flow filter cartridge as the core filter element, and forms a two-stage protection chain with an upstream self-cleaning filter. The self-cleaning filter removes coarse sand, rock fragments and large flocs via automatic backwash, avoiding abrasive solids from scratching and rapidly fouling the high flow filter cartridge. Produced water from oil and gas wells contains dispersed crude oil, silt, clay, iron oxide, scale crystals and chemical additive residues. If these contaminants are pumped back into the formation during water injection, they will plug pore throats and reduce oil recovery efficiency. They also clog chokes, valves and instrument sensors, bringing frequent maintenance and unplanned shutdowns. Our high flow filter cartridge uses composite gradient pleated media, featuring large effective filtration area, high solids holding capacity and excellent resistance to oil fouling. Compared with traditional small-size filter cartridges, far fewer elements are needed for the same high flow rate, which reduces housing footprint, sealing points and cartridge replacement labor. It is widely used for oilfield injection water polishing, deck process water filtration, pre-treatment before water reinjection and produced water reuse on onshore pads, offshore platforms and fracking sites.
Working Principle

Oilfield produced water enters the stainless steel filter housing and distributes evenly around the outer surface of each high flow filter cartridge. The system runs on an outside-in radial flow pattern. The gradient composite media traps larger sand grains and oil-associated flocs on the outer pleats, while fine clay particles and tiny oil droplets are captured within the dense inner filter layers. Treated water flows inward through the perforated inner support core and converges to the outlet manifold for reinjection or further treatment.
The staged filtration layout is essential for oil and gas conditions. The upstream self-cleaning filter handles bulk sand and debris, cycling backwash automatically based on preset time or differential pressure without disposable consumables. The downstream high flow filter cartridge handles the fine polishing duty for residual fines.
As solids and oil contaminants accumulate on the filter media, the pressure difference between inlet and outlet rises gradually. When delta pressure hits the set threshold, the high flow filter cartridges need replacement. Differential pressure transmitters or local gauges provide real-time clogging feedback, so operators can schedule cartridge change-out during planned shutdowns instead of emergency maintenance.
The housing internal flow path is optimized to minimize sediment dead zones, which is vital for water with high suspended solids and residual oil. The sealing structure is designed to resist hydrocarbon swelling and chemical attack from oilfield additives.

Buying & Selection Guide
When selecting a high flow filter for oil and gas service, buyers need to confirm design flow rate, working pressure, temperature, water salinity, H₂S content, oil content, required micron rating and piping standard.
If the produced water carries heavy sand loads, we strongly recommend installing a self-cleaning filter upstream as the first barrier. It intercepts bulk sand and prevents abrasive wear and premature fouling of high flow filter cartridge.
For high oil content produced water, select oil-resistant composite media and FKM seals. For sour service, NACE-compliant duplex stainless steel housing is required.
For offshore platforms, compact skid-mounted design with offshore certification is available. We can supply material test reports, pressure vessel certificates and technical drawings for tender submission.
FAQ
Q1: Why choose high flow filter cartridge over wound cartridges for oilfield injection water?
A: High flow filter cartridge delivers much larger filtration area. It achieves high flow with fewer elements, reduces skid size, cuts sealing points and lowers the frequency of field cartridge replacement, which is critical for remote oil pads and offshore platforms.
Q2: What risk will unfiltered produced water bring to injection wells?
A: Fine silt, clay and oil flocs will plug the formation pores, reduce injectivity, increase injection pressure and lead to expensive well stimulation work.
Q3: How does the self-cleaning filter cooperate with this high flow filter system?
A: The self-cleaning filter removes coarse sand and rock debris automatically by backwashing. It acts as the first barrier, protecting the downstream high flow filter cartridge from abrasive damage and rapid clogging.
Q4: Can this filter run continuously on oilfield 24-hour operation?
A: Yes. The pressure vessel housing is designed for continuous oilfield service. Cartridge replacement is only triggered when differential pressure rises to the set value, and the change-out procedure is fast.
Q5: What filtration accuracy is commonly used for oilfield injection water?
A: 5μm and 10μm are the most popular grades for injection water polishing. 2μm is selected for high-value reservoirs with strict anti-damage requirements.
