Product Introduction

Glass fiber cartridge is a large-diameter pleated filter consumable engineered for high-precision industrial liquid filtration, most commonly deployed in the pretreatment stage of ultrafiltration systems. Unlike conventional polypropylene filter cartridges, this product uses glass fiber as its primary filter medium. The glass fiber medium adopts a gradient pore structure, with pore size gradually decreasing from outer layer to inner layer, which delivers superior capture efficiency for tiny suspended solids, colloids, iron oxide and fine silt in raw water. Installed on the upstream side of ultrafiltration membrane modules, glass fiber cartridge intercepts particulate pollutants before raw water enters expensive UF membranes, greatly mitigating membrane fouling, extending membrane service life, and reducing the frequency of costly chemical cleaning cycles for the whole water treatment system.

Thanks to its wide diameter design, a single glass fiber cartridge can handle high liquid throughput. Compared with standard small-bore filter elements, fewer cartridges are required within filter housings to achieve the same total system flow. This reduces spare parts inventory burden and simplifies on-site filter replacement work for plant operators and system integrators. When designing complete water treatment skids, engineers can match glass fiber cartridge with PFTM102UNPFC high flow filter cartridge and Parker MFNP010-40N Mega-Flow Filter to construct gradient multi-stage raw water prefiltration.

The glass fiber cartridge adopts adhesive-free thermal fusion manufacturing process. The glass fiber medium is compounded with reinforced support layers and thermally bonded to polypropylene end caps and internal/external support skeletons. This production method eliminates the risk of adhesive dissolution and secondary contamination of process water under long-time fluid scouring. Glass fiber material features higher temperature resistance and better chemical compatibility than PP media, performing steadily in neutral, weak acid and weak alkaline aqueous fluids. Whether customers are retrofitting existing ultrafiltration production lines or purchasing spare filter consumables for newly commissioned UF equipment, glass fiber cartridge maintains consistent and repeatable pretreatment filtration performance for diverse industrial water treatment projects.

Working Principle

Glass fiber cartridge works on the gradient depth filtration mechanism. Raw liquid flows into the filter housing and travels radially inward from the outer pleated surface of glass fiber medium. Larger sediment and rust fragments are trapped on the outer pleated layer. Fine colloids and micro particulate contaminants penetrate the multi-layer staggered glass fiber web and get captured in the medium’s internal pore gaps.

The unique gradient pore design of glass fiber allows pollutants of different particle sizes to be trapped in different layers of filter medium, rather than only accumulating on the outermost filter surface. This evenly distributes intercepted contaminants across the entire filter medium, slowing the rising speed of inlet-outlet differential pressure, maximizing dirt holding volume and extending filter operating cycles. When the pressure difference between filter inlet and outlet reaches the preset threshold value, the filter medium becomes saturated with trapped impurities, and field operators need to install a new glass fiber cartridge.

Glass fiber cartridge forms the core protective barrier for ultrafiltration membranes. Without effective upstream prefiltration, fine solid particles in raw water will directly scour UF membrane surfaces, block membrane pores, accelerate irreversible fouling, shorten membrane lifespan and increase maintenance costs. When used in series with PFTM11UEPFB high flow filter cartridge for multi-stage combined filtration, the long-term operational stability of ultrafiltration equipment can be significantly improved. It should be noted that glass fiber cartridge can only remove solid particulate contaminants and cannot filter dissolved ions, so it functions purely as mechanical prefiltration before ultrafiltration membranes.

Quality Control

Every batch of glass fiber cartridge undergoes full-process production inspection and finished-product performance testing before shipment. Raw material inspection is performed for glass fiber filter media, support cores and end caps to guarantee stable batch-to-batch quality consistency. During manufacturing, sampling inspections cover pleating uniformity, medium tensile strength, thermal sealing integrity and end cap bonding performance.

Finished product tests include bubble point integrity test, cyclic pressure impulse test, flow pressure drop test and particle retention efficiency test. Defective filters with medium cracks, poor sealing or loose structures will be fully screened out. The glue-free thermal fusion sealing eliminates adhesive leaching risk that may contaminate process liquid. The glass fiber medium has stable structure and low fiber shedding rate under continuous liquid flushing, which makes it suitable for high-precision industrial pretreatment scenarios.

All products comply with strict industrial filtration quality management standards. Each glass fiber cartridge is individually packaged to avoid dust and particle contamination during storage and transportation. Complete technical datasheets are supplied for engineering design, BOM creation and quotation reference. After filter installation and before system startup, on-site inspection should be performed to confirm filter housing interface matching and sealing integrity.

Application Fields

Glass fiber cartridge is widely adopted as pretreatment filter for ultrafiltration water treatment systems, and also suitable for a broad range of other industrial liquid filtration scenarios.

  1. Industrial ultrafiltration system pretreatment: Intercept fine particles, iron scale and colloids, protect UF membrane elements, reduce membrane fouling and chemical cleaning frequency. Suitable for raw water purification and industrial wastewater reuse projects.

  2. Power plant water treatment: Pre-filtration for boiler feed water and condensate water, removing fine suspended particulate impurities.

  3. Oil & gas industry: Produced water pretreatment before ultrafiltration, removal of fine silt and oil solid residues.

  4. Chemical industry: Process liquid filtration and circulating cooling water pretreatment for chemical production lines.

  5. Municipal water reuse: Large-flow raw water prefiltration for municipal wastewater recycling plants.

  6. Fine chemical manufacturing: Pretreatment filtration of process water for fine chemical production.

System designers can configure multi-stage gradient filtration scheme according to raw water pollutant composition and turbidity of each individual project to optimize overall filtration efficiency.

FAQ

Q1: What advantages does glass fiber cartridge have over polypropylene filter cartridge?

A: Glass fiber medium has gradient depth filtration structure, better fine particle interception efficiency, higher temperature resistance and larger dirt holding capacity. It is more suitable for working conditions that need ultra-fine particle removal before ultrafiltration equipment.

Q2: What factors affect the service life of glass fiber cartridge?

A: There is no fixed time-based replacement cycle. Service cycle depends on raw water turbidity, contaminant concentration and real operating flow rate. It is recommended to replace the filter once inlet-outlet differential pressure reaches 0.35 MPa.

Q3: Can I clean and reuse clogged glass fiber cartridge?

A: It is disposable pleated filter cartridge. Once fiber gaps are saturated with trapped contaminants, backwashing cannot fully restore original filtration performance. Reuse will bring particle leakage risk, so direct replacement is recommended.

Q4: What filter housings are compatible with glass fiber cartridge?

A: It fits 40-inch or 60-inch high flow filter housings with bayonet locking interface. Before ordering, confirm housing dimensions, internal cavity space and pressure rating to avoid installation mismatch.

Q5: What is the maximum continuous working temperature of glass fiber cartridge?

A: The maximum continuous operating temperature is 80℃. For working temperature exceeding this value, please contact our technical team for condition assessment and customized recommendations.

Q6: How many glass fiber cartridges do I need for my ultrafiltration system?

A: The required quantity is calculated based on total system flow rate, single-filter rated flow and raw water quality parameters. Calculate with the technical datasheet and reserve reasonable surplus to cope with raw water quality fluctuations.
