1. Product Introduction

The high flow filter cartridge housing is the pressure vessel designed specifically to accommodate large-diameter, high-flow pleated filter cartridges in ultrafiltration pretreatment, RO feed water and other industrial liquid filtration workflows. Unlike standard small-bore filter housings for 2.5-inch filter bags or standard cartridges, this housing is engineered for the 4.5-inch outer diameter high flow filter cartridges, which deliver far higher throughput per single element. The model HFU640UY400J, a popular 60-inch high flow filter cartridge, is one of the most common elements installed inside this housing, widely deployed in UF pretreatment skids for surface water, groundwater and reclaimed water projects.

The whole housing assembly consists of a main cylinder body, inlet and outlet ports, vent valve, drain valve, cartridge mounting manifold, sealing cover and lifting lugs. The internal manifold structure ensures every cartridge receives balanced water flow. Poor manifold design will lead to flow channeling, which means some cartridges are overloaded while others are barely used, shortening overall filter run time and wasting filter capacity.

For system integrators and water treatment plant operators, interchangeability is a major advantage. This housing fits the full range of high flow cartridges on our product line. When you configure your filtration train, you can match the housing with High Flow Rate Filter Cartridge for Ultrafiltration Pre-treatment for general-duty pretreatment. If your project requires strict particle interception performance, you can load Absolute Micron Rating High Flow Filter for UF Pre-treatment inside the same housing without changing the vessel.

For raw water with high suspended solids, many customers build a two-stage filtration setup: the first stage uses coarse grade elements such as 100 Micron High Flow Filter Cartridge for Ultrafiltration Pre-treatment to capture large debris, while the second stage, housed in an identical high flow filter cartridge housing, uses fine elements like 5 Micron High Flow Filter Cartridge for Ultrafiltration Pre-treatment to polish the feed water before it reaches the UF membrane. The shared housing design simplifies spare parts inventory and standardizes maintenance procedures across the whole pretreatment system.

We offer housing material options including carbon steel with epoxy coating, 304 stainless steel and 316L stainless steel. Carbon steel epoxy coated versions are cost-effective for clean neutral raw water; stainless steel versions are selected for corrosive water, seawater, chemical process liquid and high-purity water applications. Custom port sizes, side-in / bottom-in flow configurations and multi-cartridge arrangements are available to match skid layout and site flow requirements.

2. Working Principle

The high flow filter cartridge housing operates as a pressure containment and flow distribution unit. Raw liquid enters the housing through the inlet port, filling the outer chamber of the vessel. The manifold plate separates the unfiltered outer chamber from the filtered inner chamber. Water flows radially from outside to inside through each high flow cartridge installed on the manifold. After particles, colloids and suspended contaminants are trapped by the filter media, clean filtrate collects inside the inner core of the cartridges and flows through the manifold to the outlet port toward the ultrafiltration membrane system.

Auxiliary valves play key roles in daily operation. The top vent valve removes trapped air during system start-up. Air accumulation inside the housing creates air pockets, reduces effective filtration area and causes unstable pressure readings. The bottom drain valve is used for flushing sediment before cartridge replacement and draining the vessel for maintenance.

The housing itself does not remove particles; its core function is to maintain stable pressure, distribute flow evenly and protect the filter cartridges. If the housing has internal burrs, uneven manifold sealing or misaligned cartridge seats, unfiltered liquid can bypass the filter cartridges directly through gaps, which is called bypass leakage. This will let contaminants pass to the UF membrane and cause rapid membrane fouling. That is why sealing integrity and precision machining of the manifold are critical quality indicators for a high flow filter cartridge housing.

Differential pressure monitoring is always mounted across the housing inlet and outlet. The pressure difference reading reflects the loading condition of the cartridges inside the housing. When the preset differential pressure limit is reached, operators shut down the system, drain and vent the housing, then open the cover to replace the loaded cartridges. The housing is designed for repeated opening and closing cycles, but the sealing gasket needs regular inspection and replacement to prevent leakage.

3. Technical Parameters

Compatible cartridge size: 4.5 inch OD high flow filter cartridges, 20/40/60 inch lengths, compatible with HFU640UY400J and other HFU series elements. Number of cartridges per housing: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 16 and custom multi-element configurations. Housing material: Carbon steel with food-grade epoxy coating, SS304, SS316L stainless steel. Design pressure: Standard 1.0 MPa; optional 1.6 MPa high pressure version. Design temperature: -10℃ ~ 80℃, depends on seal material. Seal material options: EPDM, silicone, Viton, Buna-N. Connection type: Flange connection or threaded NPT connection. Built-in accessories: Vent valve, drain valve, pressure gauge ports, lifting lugs, cartridge manifold plate. Surface finish: Epoxy coated for carbon steel; brushed or mirror polished for stainless steel. Flow capacity: Depends on the quantity and micron rating of loaded cartridges; a single HFU640UY400J cartridge can support high flow rates for water pretreatment.

All pressure vessels are designed following industrial pressure vessel standards. The design pressure is the maximum safe working pressure, and the system operating pressure must stay below this rating. Shock pressure and water hammer in the pipeline should be controlled, otherwise the housing, gaskets and cartridges may suffer damage.

4. Quality Assurance

Every high flow filter cartridge housing is manufactured and inspected under ISO 9001 quality management standards. Raw steel plates are inspected for material certificates before cutting and welding. Weld seams are checked by visual inspection and penetrant testing; stainless steel housings can be provided with passivation treatment to improve corrosion resistance.

After welding, each housing undergoes hydrostatic pressure testing at 1.5 times the design pressure to verify pressure resistance and eliminate hidden leakage risks. The manifold plate is CNC machined to guarantee flatness, so every cartridge seat seals tightly without distortion. Gasket grooves are precision processed to avoid gasket extrusion and leakage under pressure.

Before packaging, finished housings are cleaned to remove welding slag, oil residue and metal debris. Debris left inside the vessel will scratch filter cartridges and cause fibre shedding or media damage after startup. We provide material test certificates, pressure test reports and drawing documents for each batch. All accessories including valves and pressure ports are sourced from qualified suppliers. We also remind customers in the operation manual that regular inspection of gaskets and vent/drain valves is required to keep the housing running safely.

6. FAQ

Q1: Can this high flow filter cartridge housing fit HFU640UY400J filter cartridges?

A: Yes. This housing is specially designed for 4.5-inch outer diameter high flow cartridges, and HFU640UY400J is a fully compatible 60-inch high flow element. Confirm the cartridge length and manifold seat style before ordering.

Q2: What is the difference between carbon steel epoxy housing and stainless steel housing?

A: Carbon steel epoxy coated housing is cost-effective for neutral fresh water. Stainless steel (304 / 316L) offers better corrosion resistance for seawater, slightly acidic or alkaline liquid, and high-purity water systems.

Q3: How many cartridges can be installed inside one housing?

A: We have standard single-cartridge and multi-cartridge models from 3 up to 16 cartridges. The quantity is selected according to your target system flow rate and allowable pressure drop.

Q4: What maintenance work is required for the filter housing?

A: After each cartridge replacement, inspect the sealing gasket for aging, cracking or deformation. Clean the manifold and housing interior regularly. Check vent and drain valves to ensure they open and close smoothly.

Q5: Can the housing work continuously without stopping?

A: It can run continuously under rated pressure and temperature. But you need to monitor differential pressure. When the differential pressure rises to the set limit, you must shut down the system to replace the internal filter cartridges.

Q6: Can I mix different micron ratings of cartridges inside the same housing?

A: It is not recommended. Mixed micron grades will cause uneven loading and flow channeling. It is better to use cartridges of the same rating and model in one housing.
