Product Introduction
As an essential industrial water filter, the high flow filter cartridge is installed inside the water filter housing to intercept suspended solids and sediment, and can be combined with a self-cleaning filter to build multi-stage pretreatment for RO systems. DOE and SOE refer to two different end cap structures for high flow filter cartridges, which determine how the cartridge seals and fixes inside the filter housing. Many project buyers only check the length and micron rating while ignoring end cap style, which causes compatibility issues during on-site installation. Import filter brands provide both DOE and SOE versions, but with high pricing and long delivery lead times. Our factory manufactures DOE and SOE high flow filter cartridges as drop-in replacements for mainstream imported filter elements. Confirming the end cap type before ordering ensures tight sealing, eliminates bypass risk and protects the whole pretreatment system.
Working Principle
DOE (Double Open End) High Flow Filter Cartridge
DOE means both ends of the filter cartridge are open. When installed in the matched water filter housing, the upper and lower knife-edge sealing plates compress the two open ends of the cartridge. Raw water flows from outside of the pleated media into the inner core, and filtered water passes through the hollow end openings. The knife edge cuts into the cartridge end gasket to achieve sealing, preventing unfiltered water bypass.

SOE (Single Open End) High Flow Filter Cartridge
SOE means only one end is open, and the other end is a sealed closed cap with an O-ring adapter (222 or 226). During installation, the O-ring part inserts into the housing’s internal septum. The O-ring forms radial sealing between the cartridge and the septum. Raw water flows through the filter media, and clean water exits from the single open end.
A self-cleaning filter installed upstream removes coarse sediment in advance, reducing particle impact on the cartridge sealing surface for both DOE and SOE types.
Comparison Reference Table
| Comparison Item | DOE High Flow Filter Cartridge | SOE High Flow Filter Cartridge |
|---|
| Full Name | Double Open End | Single Open End |
| End Structure | Both ends open, no built-in O-ring | One end closed, one open end with 222 / 226 O-ring adapter |
| Sealing Method | Knife-edge axial compression seal | O-ring radial seal with internal septum |
| Housing Requirement | Housing must have upper & lower knife-edge retainers | Housing needs matched internal septum for O-ring insertion |
| Installation | Need vertical compression during installation | Insert the cartridge into septum, simpler alignment |
| Leakage Risk | Low when properly compressed; risk if compression is insufficient | Low with intact O-ring; risk if O-ring is damaged or misplaced |
| Maintenance | Need to control compression force to avoid crushing end cap | Easier replacement, less risk of end cap damage |
| Common Application | Large multi-cartridge high flow housings, RO pretreatment | Small or medium filter housings, food & pharmaceutical water |
Core Advantages of Correct End Cap Selection
1. Avoid Fluid Bypass and Protect RO Membranes
Mismatched end cap and housing will create gaps for unfiltered raw water to pass directly to RO membranes, bringing silt and colloids and causing irreversible membrane fouling.
2. Match Existing Water Filter Housing Without Modification
If you already own filter housings, you must choose the same end cap type. Changing from DOE to SOE requires replacing the internal septum assembly of the housing.
3. Reduce On-site Installation Errors
SOE cartridges with O-rings are easier for field workers to install correctly. DOE cartridges require careful adjustment of compression pressure to prevent end cap cracking or poor sealing.
4. Adapt to Different System Maintenance Cycles
For projects with frequent filter replacement, SOE simplifies maintenance. For large-scale continuous running RO plants with stable operators, DOE multi-cartridge housings deliver excellent large-flow performance.
5. Work Efficiently With Upstream Self Cleaning Filter
Whether DOE or SOE, pairing with a self-cleaning filter removes large particles ahead of the high flow filter cartridge, reducing abrasion on sealing surfaces and extending filter service life.
Application Scenarios
DOE High Flow Filter Cartridge:
Large industrial RO pretreatment, power plant water, large flow municipal water filtration, multi-cartridge high flow filter housing

SOE High Flow Filter Cartridge:
Food and beverage process water, pharmaceutical water, small and medium industrial pure water, compact filter housings
Both optional:
General industrial circulating water filtration, wastewater reuse pretreatment
FAQ
Q1: Can I install DOE high flow filter cartridge into an SOE water filter housing?
A1: Not directly. You need to replace the internal septum and sealing assembly of the housing, which increases project cost and workload.
Q2: What is the difference between 222 and 226 SOE adapters?
A2: They are two different sizes of O-ring connection. Confirm the septum dimension of your water filter housing before ordering SOE cartridges.
Q3: Which end cap style has lower leakage risk?
A3: When installed correctly, both styles have reliable sealing. Improper installation is the main cause of leakage for both DOE and SOE.
Q4: Can I mix DOE and SOE cartridges in the same filter housing?
A4: Absolutely not. The housing internal structure can only support one end cap type, mixing will lead to serious bypass.
Q5: Which one should I choose for retrofitting an existing filter housing?
A5: Select the same end cap type as your original cartridge. If your old elements are DOE, continue using DOE; if original are SOE, stick with SOE.
